Why do I see Alexander the Great everywhere I turn?

It's amazing how being up close to the North Indians, reminds you of the lasting heritage Alexander the Great has brought on this continent more than 2000 years ago. Almost every person I see here looks like a white guy (or lady) with a huge tan.

It's one thing to see it on Bollywood movies, and quite another to experience the full impact of actually being here in Delhi.

Another short note, the office buildings here are world-class. Once out on the street though, I'm transported to the movie set of "City of God". For anyone who still remebers this movie, you would know what i'm talking about.. anyway, hope to post some pics on this trip later..... till then, signing off..

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the great German poet, once wrote: 'Love is an idealistic thing, marriage a real thing; a confusion of the real with the idealistic never goes unpunished.'

This came from today's article in Straits Times (din think i'd remember quotes in my head rite? :) Used to have a scrapbook on quotes, but lost it).

Anyway, back to the main topic on high divorce rates. Man, 56% for German marriages? That's ridiculously high. Anyway, pray and hope I won't be a casualty of divorce when and if i do get married.

Related to this is a book called "Conditions of Love" by John Armstrong. It's a good read, detailing how people thoroughout the western ages think about love, in the context of literature of that time. Good start to thinking more about how we see love, sometimes, thru a one-sided aspect. What the book really prescribes is a mature view of love and it's many facets. It's something like a self-help book, but without the blatant 'how-tos".

Best way to observe tho, is from other other married households. Nothin like the real drama happenning in front of you :)

News (and in Washington Times) of Peter Drucker's death recently is indeed a downer.

This visionary man single-handedly defined the practice of management and other related issues in such clarity in the 1940's that every management thinker since is but a shadow and a subset of this man's ideas.

Fellow Bloggers, if you haven't read him, do check out his works. His vision and depth of thought is astounding, and I believe anyone who reads him will benefit from his insights.

Terms which we take for granted like "Management by Objectives", "Knowledge Worker" were concepts he thought of 60 years ago, and still valid to this day and age.

Family trip to HK and Shenzhen

Whew, triring trip man, esp travelling with family members. I think i shall take a break from travelling with family for some time...Nothing against it, but having 2 older(read: fussy) folks and 2 noisy nephews on my vacation takes a bit of effort :)
It has been a good 7 days tho..Promised to take Mum to China after she recovered so.. promise is a promise.

Here's some shots of the trip. Splendid China in Shenzhen is a great place. (for those who haven't been there, but plan to in future, pls DO NOT go Shenzhen's World Monuments; it's just not worth it, esp if you've seen the actual monuments before).

It's a lazy Saturday afternooon, and thanks to David(Bulldog)'s comments on the new Mazda RX5, I'm now admiring this object of beauty both online, and on the roads.

I've never been a car person (i don't know anything about torque, horsepower, 0-100 mph in XX secs, what-not..). But having been in Malaysia for more than a year now, and listening to most people talk about them, i think a little of the love for cars has rubbed off. Bear in mind, most people in Malaysia drive cars due to it's relatively cheap price: the cheapest new Perodua Kancil (very small car) can be purchased at RM25,000. Plus there's a small but active group of people who own exotic (read: antique) cars that cost a bomb, but hardly gets used, and also the active community of illegal car racers. Even our Warehouse Handlers own re-fitted Proton Wiras that look look like an Ah-Beng's car-dream come true.

Anyway, this whole blog is pretty pointless... Just admiring the beautiful Mazda Miata.

It was a great weekend in Singapore last week! Spent every minute of it catching up with friends, collegues, family..Must be the full moon having some positive aura on events: People are just in a celebratory/partying mood last weekend!

Quick breakdown: Spent Saturday morning catching up with Ry. Taught me a cool trick of taking people off-centre in a pix. Moody shot. (he's anything but that, had a blast with him). BTW, this guy is the best DJ, arranger for techno, rnb, soul, house music in the whole of singapore! I'm not kidding. Will upload some of his tunes next time for keen listeners, so stay tuned. Check out a sample of his techno track.

Next, YQ's Farewell organized by Hippocampus. Really great to see most Sembcorp plp doin fine. Some have newborn kids, some got married, some getting married, most progressing in their careers...It's great to be in the company of friends.
YQ's appointment at Shell is a positive step forward for Singapore, for Asians, for women in the corporate world in general, din realize this until sister brought it up. Wish her all the best in her new job.

The topic: Your 5 Quirks!

Mine are:

1) In total opposite to sonic, I need quiet environments. Noise irritates me (not the STOMP!, Photek, Prodigy kinda rhythmic noise that resembles music, but the random, grating sound of drills, grass-cutters, car-horns. GRRR...

2) I eat apples (or any other fruits that don't require me to peel off the skin) in a cirular fashion. Kinda hard to describe, but imagine an upright apple: First the top half gets eaten in a cirular way, then the bottom half get eaten in the same fashion. About 12 big bites ought to do the apple in..:P Very effective, nothing goes to waste using this method.

3) I bath in the exact sequence everytime: first hair, chest, legs, then err.. you-know-where-lah, then when all clean.. face scrubbing. no change since..goodness, can't remember when I did this in a difference sequence.

4) I sum the car numbers to figure out the total sum when I look at car plates (not eveyrtime lah, but about 30% of the time). I heard that the personality tests administered by the PSC-Public Service Commission/MINDEF scholarships plp actually ask you whether you do this during my time. No clue tho, never(couldn't) applied for these scholarships...:P Oya, I kinda take a mental note to see if the total is a prime/odd/even number or not. I dunno what is more freaky, that some stat board/gov agency actually asks these kinda stuff to determine who to hand out scholarships to, or that I actually still do this kinda thing.

5) I'm right handed, but I only hold two things with my left: Phone, cup/mug, and a gun (I was in the revolver club ages ago in uni, I hope no one thot of anything else)

Just introduced The Tipping Point to Wan, which I think quite accurately describes him. I kinda intrugued him when I started calling him a 'Maven', and now he's reading it too :). I don't think I personally fit into a Connector, Maven or Salesman archetype, but i know a lot of people who do. For example, I think Wei Tiong is a 'Connector', Perry is a 'Salesman', Jamie is a 'Connector', possibly a 'Salesman', Ricky is a 'Maven, & possibly even a 'Connector'.

Ricky, tell me if I'm rite okay? dun want to pigean-hole you into the WRONG HOLE!, not that i should anyway, but it's kinda fun. Tell me if it's wrong :)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Just watched "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" again on DVD last week. First caught it en-route to Sydney in 2004.

This terrific movie captures the concept of memories so well, especially memories of romantic love. Here’s something the writer, Charlie Kaufman (a writing genius I think) has to say about it:

“I wanted to deal with someone’s IDEA of their relationship. Because you’re not seeing the relationship, you’re seeing Joel’s idea of the relationship,” Kaufman said. “I was trying to figure out what a memory feels like. I think you just assume that your memory is just sort of a video playback of your experience, but it’s nothing like that at all. It’s a complete re-fabrication of an event and a lot of it is made up, because you’re filling in spaces.”

The movie just brought back memories of my relationship with Vivian. The feelings came swelling back the past few days, even had dreams about it. I must have a few issues I have not fully thought through even though we’ve split-up and I haven’t seen her since July 2003. I mean this was 2 years ago! and I still have such strong feelings on the matter! Matter of the heart truly knows no bounds..Really must pray and seek God’s guidance on this..

The movies just makes me wonder; just because I had felt so much for her, didn’t mean that she saw me in the same light, even after having gone through so much together for 3 years.

It’s strange that this is also the first time I’ve been able to write on my thoughts about her; in the past, the anger and disappointment over her actions and betrayal remained the forefront.

Perhaps this is good; I constantly have to remind myself what Lee Pin told me some years back: forgiving is a continuous verb. Even years after, the feelings could be triggered by certain events (in this case, a movie), and you have to remind yourself that what someone did was in the past, she may not be the same person anymore..And that any hurts you have felt were real, but so was your love for her. If moving on means re-wiring the hurts and affirming what was good in the relationship, then so be it.

Teaser looks good. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.. hopefully not a disappointing book-to-movie translation like "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Can't really blame the producers tho.. some books just can't be translated to the big screen.

For those who haven't read the book, it's written by CS Lewis, and the story is a very thinly-veiled depiction of Christ's battle with the Devil over domination of mankind. Well, seems almost every epic movie is battle between good n evil, i suppose the story could allude to many metaphors :) Anyway, will be worth seeing Aslan the lion in action.

Why I started blogging

I started blogging on a friend's suggestion after I told him I was bored out of my wits even though I’ve got tons of work to do. Well, actually I tried to be cool and told him that I already posted a blog way back in 2002, but that was only a test blog! Ricky, now you know, hahaha. :P

But after a few posts, I started doubting; whether this is just a fad, something I’ll do when I’m bored, and whether my intentions were right.
It’s as if, my internal critic just kicked in and said:
1. “Isn’t this a waste of time? Don’t you have work to do?
2. Why not spend time talking to REAL people on the issues that you post?
3. Aren’t you just looking for attention? “

To that, my reply is:
1. Yes, I’ve got lots of work to do. Believe me, I’ve spent almost the entire one year after being posted to Malaysia working late nights. And as time progressed, I find that I got more ineffective. I allowed work to take up so much time that even though it’s fun and challenging, I had no time to reflect on my work, plus my social life suffered (especially bad since I don’t have many close friends who are still in Malaysia and need time and effort to re-build old ties and make new ones). But, blogging take only anywhere between 5 mins to 30 mins at most, and provides an outlet for me to think about things instead of just crashing into bed every day.

2. To critical point 2., my answer would be similar to 1. Currently, my close friends are mostly scattered in various countries. All of which is more than a stones throw away! I’d like to know what they’re up to, and I’d like them to know what I’m up to as well.

3. Well……to this, I can say: YEA! I’m an attention-grabbing freak! :) But seriously, when I think about it, I would say no. I don’t expect this to be a regularly visited blog besides myself; I do self-censor my blogs in that I don’t spill-out VERY personal stuff about myself or my family and friends. So it’s definitely not drama. And since when does sharing my thoughts with friends constitute “looking for attention”?

Now, here’re some additional reasons why I should blog:

- It keeps me motivated to be attuned to people around me and my surroundings, and disciplines me to reflect on my daily events. This really helps put things into perspective.
(Critic: but a journal will do that equally well rite? Reply: yup, but first I always lose the paper notes when I pen down my thoughts and ideas, and secondly, it’s easier to link to websites which usually trigger those thoughts, rather than copy the link and paste them into a Word document which has been a hassle so far)

- This allows me to keep in touch with friends by reading their blogs, and vice versa.
(Critic: wouldn’t MSN/phone messages/phone calls do? Reply: well, messages and calls may interrupt someone who may be busy at that time, plus they cost money. MSNs are great for instant communication but not the best format to communicate long reflections that Blogs excel at.)

- By searching through my past blogs, I can draw on past musings easier than thumbing through scores of handwritten pages.

- Finally, it’s FUN! (in big caps, no less)

I’m sure there are other reasons, but all in all, I think it’s a worthy adventure. Who knows, one day my kids/grandkids will be curious enough to ask for those grandfather stories, as Mr Brown has so nicely put in his blog, and all I have to do is pull out my blog page and show them. (I’ve found a way to beat you, Mr. Senility! HAH!)

As a newbie, I shall now try to move up the food chain as described in Lifecycle of a Blogger, and in my attempt to capitalize on what he refers to as “You've become a stats whore”, I’ve linked this blog to him :P

One danger though: as with everything, I think blogging should be done with moderation lest it interferes with other important things in life: spending time with God, family, friends, work etc. (If anyone doesn’t think that reading blogs are addictive, feel free to read XiaXie’s blogs (there, “You've become a stats whore” at work again) and see if they catch your attention or not!!)

I guess one test whether I’ll get addicted to blogging (or any other activity for that matter), is a simple question:
1. Can I live without blogging for long periods of time without itching to blog every other day/min?
